Sleepy Baby Elephant at Columbus Zoo Is Stealing Hearts Left and Right
When it comes to babies, they need their sleep. These tiny ones just entered the world, and it can be overwhelming for their little selves. As much as they may love falling asleep anywhere they lay their heads, parents love seeing their kids at peace even more. And those adorable sounds and faces they make when they snooze are priceless! You just want to watch them all day long.
Visitors and staff at the Columbus Zoo can relate to being captivated by a little one. A sleepy baby elephant is stealing hearts left and right. Recently, the @columbuszooandaquarium TikTok shared a video of this calf, and it’s too cute!
How many times did you hit replay? This baby girl has had audiences stunned since her birth, and people have been checking in on her ever since her public debut earlier this year.
In this video, you get to see this baby elephant practically going through all of the stages a child goes through before it’s time to sleep. It starts with a close up. Just look at her little toes!
Then, you really see this little one’s nap time phases. She’s getting tired, and like most babies, she chooses to snuggle up to her parent. Aww! This baby calf probably feel super safe cuddled up under them.

This baby is definitely at peace because the next thing you see is her knocked out. She’s sleeping without a care in the world.
After that, you see her parent moving hay around and covering up their baby in hay. It’s almost like they’re putting a blanket over them for protection and warmth.
And like most babies, this young elephant can feel the smallest of movements. If she’s like human children, she doesn’t like to be woken up by anything. Luckily, the last bit of the video shows us that this baby girl is still tired and needs her rest. The baby elephant even gives the most precious yawn at the end.
How Often Do Baby Elephants Sleep?
Elephants don’t sleep that much. The @columbuszooandaquarium went on to explain in the post caption, “While baby elephants only sleep about four to six hours a day, sleeping is still essential to healthy growth and development for the calf.” And this baby is growing up fast. They went on to say that she was recently weighed, and they noted, “[S]he’s already gained over 60 pounds since birth.”
The zoo also mentioned that this baby girl is already pretty curious. Let’s hope that they continue to show us every step of this baby elephant’s journey. These special moments are the sweetest!
