Andrew arrest – live: Calls to ensure ex-prince can ‘never become king’
Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey has said MPs will need to consider what steps to take to ensure Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor can never become king.
Police searches remained underway at Andrew’s former Royal Lodge home on the Windsor estate on Friday, following his arrest on Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
The former prince was seen slouched in the back of a vehicle last night as he left Aylsham police station in Norfolk last night after being released under investigation.
The force confirmed that its searches in Norfolk have concluded, but said its searches at the Windsor estate in Berkshire are still underway.
Andrew remains eighth in line to the throne and the only way to remove him would be by an act of Parliament.
“The most important thing right now is that the police be allowed to get on with their job, acting without fear or favour,” Davey said. “But clearly this is an issue that Parliament is going to have to consider when the time is right, naturally the monarchy will want to make sure he can never become king.”
Emails released in recent weeks by the US Department of Justice appeared to show the former duke sharing reports of official visits with Epstein when he was a UK trade envoy.
Andrew has consistently denied all claims made against him in relation to Epstein.
