What we know so far
The search for Savannah Guthrie’s mother will hit the one-week mark on Sunday.
In a new video posted to Savannah Guthrie’s Instagram account on Saturday, the “Today” show anchor addressed her mother’s captors.
“We received your message, and we understand,” she said while seated between her siblings Annie and Camron. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
Nancy Guthrie was last seen outside of her home near Tucson, Ariz., at 9:30 p.m. last Saturday, and her family notified police the following morning after she did not show up for church.
The FBI is collaborating with local police on the investigation into the 84-year-old’s disappearance. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said they were treating Nancy Guthrie’s home as a “crime scene” and told NBC News the search is a “race against time.”
The sheriff also confirmed that blood found outside Nancy Guthrie’s front door was linked to the 84-year-old and told NBC News she was taken from her home in a “possible kidnapping or abduction.”
Nanos has also refused to discuss details about purported ransom notes received by several local news stations. CBS News reported that the note, which included details about what Nancy Guthrie was wearing the night she disappeared and demanded payment by a certain deadline, was shared with Savannah Guthrie.
TMZ reported that an alleged ransom note they received demanded millions in Bitcoin in exchange for the 84-year-old’s release.
On Friday, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said the office was “aware of a new message regarding Nancy Guthrie” and that their investigators were examining the message.
While speaking to reporters on Friday night, President Trump hinted at a potential “solution” to the crisis without providing many details.
“I think we’re doing very well. Very well meaning we have some clues I think that are very strong. And I think we could have some answers coming up fairly soon,” Trump said. “We have some things I think that will maybe come out reasonably soon from DOJ or FBI or whoever.”
“A lot’s taken place in the last couple of hours,” he added.
It was reported earlier this week that FBI Director Kash Patel is being personally briefed on the investigation.
The Guthrie family’s Saturday video is the latest of several clips posted by the anchor and her siblings. In another video shared on Wednesday, Savannah Guthrie said their family had heard about a reported ransom letter and expressed the need for additional details from its author to confirm that its contents were not artificially manipulated.
“As a family, we are doing everything we can,” the “Today” anchor said. “We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive, and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please, reach out to us.”
Savannah Guthrie ended the tearful message by addressing her mother directly.
“Everyone is looking for you, Mommy, everywhere,” Savannah Guthrie said. “We will not rest. Your children will not rest until we are together again. We speak to you every moment, and we pray without ceasing, and we rejoice in advance of the day that we hold you in our arms again.”
