Trump weighs in on upcoming Clinton House depositions: ‘It’s a shame’

President Trump responded Tuesday to news of the deposition dates for former President Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as part of a House investigation into the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, calling it “a shame.”

“I think it’s a shame to be honest. I always liked him. Her? Yeah. She’s a very capable woman who’s better at debating than some of the other people, I’ll tell you that. She was smarter, smart woman,” Trump said in response to The Hill during a press gathering following a bill signing in the Oval Office.

“I hate to see it in many ways,” he continued. “But then I look at me. They went after me. They wanted me to go to jail for the rest of my life and it turned out I was innocent,” he said, referring to past investigations focused on himself.

“I shouldn’t feel this way but I feel badly that they have to go through that,” he said.

The Clintons agreed Tuesday to terms under which they will testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in its Epstein probe.

The former president will appear before the committee on Feb. 27 while Hillary Clinton will testify on Feb. 26, House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) said in a statement. The duo agreed to a filmed and transcribed deposition.

In a letter to Comer on Tuesday, the Clintons’ lawyers said that after the couple agreed to the chair’s terms, Comer added “new stipulations” this morning for the deposition to be recorded on video.

“Though you have notably never asked the Clintons to appear in an open hearing, we now believe that will best suit our concerns about fairness,” the lawyers wrote. “Their answers, and your questions, can be seen by all to be judged accordingly.”

Tuesday’s agreement came as the House prepared to vote on holding the Clintons in contempt of Congress for not responding to a congressional subpoena.
