Tiny Capybara Babies Just Born at Zoo Are Stealing Everyone’s Hearts

Located in New Braunfels, Texas, Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo recently welcomed three baby capybaras to their family, and they’re beyond adorable. The Zoo shared a video to TikTok in mid-May of the trio exploring their new world, though they never get too far from mom.

In the video, the baby capybaras snuggle up with (and on top of!) each other, eat food from their food dish (and use it as a place to sit!), and nurse from their mom. They’re all so cute, and if we lived closer, we’d definitely go to visit them!

Now we want a baby capybara of our own! Viewers of Snake Farm Zoo’s video also thought the babies were adorable. @LH swooned, “The babies laying in the food bowl!! So cute!!!!” @zoey_vr0 said what we were all thinking, “Omg that’s sooo cute I need to come and see all the animals!”

Commenter @Seth Argento pointed out, “How beautiful! The capybaras have a very attentive mother who follows them everywhere.” She’s a good mama!

All About Baby Capybaras

Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world, and while some babies look nothing like their parents when they are born (think baby flamingos), capybaras look like miniature copies of their parents.

Baby capybaras, also referred to as pups, live in family groups consisting of a dominant male, several females, and subordinate males; however, the mother does most of the rearing. In the wild they live in groups of up to 100.

A-Z Animals shared this cool fact, “Within capybara groups, pups nurse from milk-producing females indiscriminately. A baby capybara will nudge a mother capybara to attempt to nurse, but if she does not stand up, it will move on to another mother and give her a nudge. The female capybaras may refuse to nurse hungry pups at a given time, but they don’t tend to reject other females’ pups in their preference.”

To say baby capybaras are vocal would be an understatement. A-Z Animals shared, “These incredibly vocal animals make various noises, from chirps, squeaks, and whistles to grunts, barks, and purrs. They use their voices constantly to communicate with one another and with the rest of the family group, and they all tend to talk simultaneously.” Baby capybaras are a noisy crowd!
