Additional cinnamon brands have been added to an existing list of recalled products that contain elevated lead levels, which over time can cause adverse health effects and neurological problems, including learning disabilities in young children.

The Food and Drug Administration announced on Oct. 10 that there are now 16 brands that have been recalled, saying “exposure to these products may be unsafe.”

An initial recall was issued in July 2024 and has been updated at least three times within the last month.

As fall baking ramps up for the holidays, consumers are advised to check their homes to see if they have any cinnamon products affected by the recall, especially since the spice has a long shelf life.

So far, “no illnesses or adverse events have been reported to date in association with these products,” according to the FDA.

Here’s what to know.

What should consumers do?

The FDA recommends that if consumers find any affected product listed above, they should “stop using” it and dispose of the cinnamon. Additionally, they shouldn’t eat, sell or serve any of the affected ground cinnamon products.

What are the symptoms of lead exposure?

If there’s a concern that someone has been exposed to an elevated amount of lead, the FDA advises consumers to contact their health care providers. “Most people have no obvious immediate symptoms of lead exposure,” the FDA advisory says.

Low levels of lead exposure in children may not present obvious symptoms, but they could experience “trouble learning, low IQ, and behavior changes,” according to the FDA alert.

Higher levels of lead exposure can include the following symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting

Dehydration, headache, exhaustion, irritability, weakness

Pain or tingling in your hands or feet

Over longer periods of time to lead exposure, symptoms can include: abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, depression, altered moods or behaviors, forgetfulness and increased blood pressure.
