Winter storm blankets New York City, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia: See photos
A massive winter storm sweeping across the U.S. turned major cities into snowglobe scenes Sunday while also creating treacherous travel and widespread disruptions. In Washington, D.C., people carved tracks through fresh powder near the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, while families bundled up for sled rides and winter play around the National Mall.
Across the Potomac in Arlington, Va., kids took advantage of the storm’s timing to turn local hills into makeshift sled runs, with the Marine Corps War Memorial as a dramatic, wintry backdrop.
In New York City, snow piled along sidewalks and iconic crossings, including the Brooklyn Bridge, as plows worked to keep streets passable and pedestrians navigated slushy intersections in Manhattan. Central Park was filled with walkers bracing against steady snowfall, while others paused to take in the unusually quiet cityscape.
Farther south, the storm brought a different kind of danger: ice. In Nashville, icicles clung to vehicles and surfaces as temperatures dropped, raising the risk of slick roads and potential power issues.
