Mama Hen Finds Her Lost Baby in the Cutest Way Possible

If you’re a parent, you know the awful feeling that sets in when your child suddenly can’t be found and you have to go searching for them. It’s a feeling that no one ever wants to experience again (trust us, we’ve been there!). As it turns out, our animal friends feel the same way, as you’ll see in this video recently shared by Smokin F BBQ on TikTok.

The video opens with the hen clucking as Smokin F explains that she hatched just one egg and has a single chick. While wandering through the family’s backyard, the pair met an English Bulldog named Buford, and the two became separated. Watch as the worried mama searches high and low for her little one and be sure to keep the sound on so you can hear her calling out for her chick.

This was just the sweetest! Smokin F BBQ said in the video’s caption, “Never underestimate a Mama’s instinct” and this clip is a great example of that. Mama wasn’t about to give up on her baby! The baby was so smart to hide, too. We’re definitely glad that this story has a happy ending!

How Hens Find Their Missing Chicks

Do you know that hens use different clucks and calls to communicate with their chicks? They have different peeps and clucks that they use when bonding and reassuring their chicks, to let them know it’s time to eat, and a separate distress call when their babies can’t be found.

Chickens use these distress calls when there’s danger nearby or to let the flock know babies are missing. Chipper Birds explains, “These special sounds act as an alarm system, alerting all the chickens in the flock when danger is near. The hen can communicate where the chicks are with their calls, so they can all search and save them.

These vocalizations also help keep the flock together. When the hen calls out for help, all the other chickens come to her aid, looking for the lost ones. This shows how important communication is for the survival of the chicks.

It’s very important for chicken owners and carers to understand this language. If they can recognize and answer the distress calls, they can help reunite chicks and their mums quickly, and strengthen the bond between humans and chickens.” It definitely takes a village!
