Nuts are often praised as a heart-healthy snack we should eat more of. But a recent recall urges consumers to steer clear of one variety for now.

If pecans are your go-to snack—whether sprinkled on oatmeal, tossed into salads, or eaten by the handful—check your supply. More than 32,000 pounds of pecan products are being recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Navarro Pecan Holdings issued the voluntary recall in accordance with the FDA, which has been elevated to a Class I risk. The recall was initiated on July 10 and posted by the FDA on August 1.

According to the FDA, Class I is “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The recalled products were distributed to commercial and retail distributors in Arkansas, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Texas. They were also distributed internationally in Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, getting Salmonella means enough of the bacteria has gotten past your stomach acid and immune system to make you sick. The bacteria destroys the cells that line your intestines, making it difficult for your body to absorb water.

In turn, Salmonella causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach pains.

The recall includes several pecan products under the following descriptions:

Fancy Medium Pecan Pieces (item code 81124)

Fancy Midget Pecan Pieces (81086)

#15 Fancy Halves (HLVS, item code 79291)

Fancy Small Pecan Pieces (81014)

The best by dates on the recalled products range from May 21, 2025 to June 13, 2025. Check the FDA’s recall notice for lot code numbers.
