Costco’s New Bakery Item Has Fans Divided—All Because Of The Way It Looks
Costco’s new Strawberry Rhubarb Pastries sparked mixed reactions online—not for the taste, but for their hole-filled design that resembles a honeycomb.
Some customers, especially those with trypophobia (a fear of clustered holes), found the pastry’s appearance deeply unsettling.
Despite the divisive look, those who tried the dessert mostly praised its flavor, calling it “so good.”
Once again, Costco’s bakery dropped a new item. While fans typically have positive reactions to new Costco desserts, this one was met with mixed reactions. And it has nothing to do with the taste, but with the appearance.
Laura Jayne Lamb of the @costcohotfinds Instagram account posted a video of the new Strawberry Rhubarb Pastries. The all-butter pastry has holes on the top so you can actually see the strawberry rhubarb filling inside, giving it a honeycomb-like appearance. The square-shaped pastries are topped with crystal sugar.
A lot of people have positive things to say about the new dessert, but others aren’t as thrilled. “My trypophobia could never,” one person commented.
“Saw them at the store today and I was immediately like omg NO! I’m glad I’m not the only one,” another person responded.
Those with trypophobia have a fear or aversion to patterns of small holes, such as those found in a honeycomb. Fruit with small seeds, cheese with holes, insects and bees, and sponges are some of the triggers of the anxiety disorder, according to the Cleveland Clinic. And it can cause a variety of symptoms like nausea, feeling of disgust, shaking, and a fast heart rate.
And in this video from @whats_in_your_cart, the poster mentions their trypophobia in the caption as the reason why they couldn’t purchase the item. “Someone please let me know what it tastes like!” they wrote.
“Before I read the caption I literally was thinking this is triggering my trypophobia 🤮😖,” one person commented on the video.
“Omg it hadn’t triggered my trypophobia until I read your caption and now I can’t even look at it! 😭😂😭,” another said.
The original poster replied: “muwhahaha it was hard just filming this reel 🤣.”
But for those who did try the new dessert, reactions were positive. “It was so good!” one user wrote.
