New gold-lettered signs were spotted across the White House this week as President Donald Trump continues to make alterations to the building.

The gold lettering is just the latest in a long line of changes Trump has made to the White House in the first year of his second administration.

Most recently, crews began demolishing the East Wing of the White House. The construction is part of Trump’s plan to build a ballroom on the eastern side of the White House and is one of the most significant projects in the historic house in decades.

As images of the new lettering circulated on social media, Democrats like Delaware Sen. Lisa Blunt and Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee Malcolm Kenyatta criticized the timing of the installation, which came as the government shutdown continued into historic territory.

“I wish they would focus on helping struggling Americans, but this isn’t a good sign,” Blunt said.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle defended the installation of the lettering, calling it a “beautification.”

“Democrats are more concerned with President Trump’s historic beautification of the White House than they are for American citizens they are hurting because of their reckless government shutdown,” Ingle said. “President Trump is working 24/7 on behalf of the American people and simultaneously making the White House even more beautiful.”

Ingle said the installations were made “at no expense to the taxpayer.”
