US Proposes 30-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine Conflict, Russia Rejects Immediate Halt

The United States has put forward a peace plan and called for a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia during talks held in Saudi Arabia. The proposal, aimed at halting hostilities and paving the way for further negotiations, was accepted by Ukraine. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the idea of an immediate end to the fighting.

The diplomatic push comes amid escalating tensions, as Russian forces continue their offensive, making significant advances toward expelling Ukrainian troops from the contested Kursk region. Putin’s statement today reaffirmed Russia’s stance, indicating that an abrupt cessation of hostilities was not in Moscow’s interest.

The proposal follows former U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments yesterday, in which he noted that NATO is “stepping up” and expressed hope that Russia would do the “right thing.” Trump’s remarks were seen as a nod to increased Western support for Ukraine and a possible shift in approach to diplomatic resolutions.

The rejection of the ceasefire request by Russia has drawn global concern, and today, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) are expected to react to Putin’s decision. The G7 nations, which include the U.S., Canada, Germany, France, Italy, the U.K., and Japan, have consistently backed Ukraine and imposed sanctions on Moscow over its military actions.

While Washington’s ceasefire initiative aimed to provide a temporary respite from the prolonged conflict, Russia’s refusal signals continued uncertainty in the region. With the G7’s response pending, international attention remains fixed on how global powers will navigate the next steps in seeking peace while addressing Russia’s expanding military operations.
