Dachshund’s ‘Postpartum Spa Night’ After Giving Birth to Four Puppies Has People in Their Feelings

After giving birth to my daughter, the first thing I wanted to do — after eating a huge snack and taking nap, of course — was take a shower. It wasn’t easy or comfortable at first, but it was a relief to finally feel clean again. No matter how you do it, birth is an ordeal and it feels like one, and I’d imagine that’s true for animals after they’ve given birth, too.

Knowing that, I’m really glad to see the postpartum Dachshund in the TikTok video below being treated like the queen she is. This mama deserves it all and more!

On Sunday, March 9, @olliemeetworld shared the postpartum spa experience she decided to give her pup after she welcomed four puppies into the world the night before.

First, she took a nice, relaxing shower, and then she was blow dried so she wouldn’t be stuck with a cold, wet coat. After her mom reset the space where she and her puppies were resting after birth with fresh puppy pads and when Mama returned, she cuddled up with her babies again. They are so sweet!

An earlier video that the OP shared revealed that this is Stella’s very first liter of puppies, so there’s no doubt that she appreciated the extra attention after reaching such a big milestone.

Caring for Postpartum Dogs

Having a new litter of puppies in the house is an exciting time, but remember that your mama dog is going to need some extra care during this time, too — just like Stella the Dachshund did.

But before we get to the pampering, Wag recommends keeping an extra close eye on your dog for the 72 hours after birth, since that’s when complications can arise. After you make sure that there are no more puppies in her uterus and that all of the placentas have been passed. You’ll also want to watch for thick, foul smelling discharge, which could signal a retained placenta or other infection.

It’s also important to have a clean, safe, comfy space set up for mama and her puppies to relax in as she recovers and adjusts to new motherhood. Within the first 24 hours, she’ll start to eat again, and it’s important to have plenty of water in her bowl so she can stay hydrated.

Wag also recommends waiting about 2-5 days for your dog’s first postpartum bath, and to minimize the time that she’s away from her babies.

Here’s hoping Stella is getting plenty of rest this week. Giving birth to four babies is no joke!
