There are a few things that send chills down the spines of toddler parents — finding the lid of a Sharpie, watching them walk by with a stepstool, and prolonged periods of silence, among them — but, nothing seals the deal quite like a toddler who has gotten ahold of a pair of scissors.

That’s because just about anything can become victim to a snip-happy kiddo, including their own hair. One poor mom went through this experience firsthand recently, when her daughter decided to give herself an impromptu makeover. Unfortunately, we don’t think this kiddo has a future as a hair stylist.

We could really feel cheydunn96’s pain when she posted a video of her reaction to finding out her little girl had taken a pair of scissors to her pretty hair. That’s because the little girl was a little heavy-handed with her trim job, and ended up giving herself a new ‘do that her mama compared to an “Amish boy.” Ouch!

The good news is that the little girl seemed to be all about the look, which serves as a reminder for us all that beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

There were a few parents who jumped into the comments to share their own experiences with the mama, reminding her not to stress about something that will grow back in a few months anyone. One person even offered some sage advice as a seasoned parent, writing, “Today’s not the day, but someday you’ll laugh. Trust me.”

But, once we really started reading through the comments, we realized something that probably explains why the mom had such a strong reaction to her daughter’s new ‘do… she herself is a professional!

After one parent told her that this was the perfect excuse to go out to the salon for a girl’s day, the mom jumped in to share that she was actually a hairstylist by trade!

Toddlers Have a Habit of Cutting Their Hair

Many parents have been in the same boat as the OP (ourselves included), and had to deal with the fallout of a scissor-happy tot. In fact, it’s so common, that a quickly Google search will provide you with suggestions on how to deal with it.

Take this one from Cloud Montessori, for example, where they explain that most little kids cut their hair on their own as an attempt to exert control, which makes it important for the grownups in their lives to watch how they respond.

For the best results, they suggest waiting until you’ve calmed down and had a moment to carefully measure your words, before informing your toddler about why it’s never okay for them to cut their hair themselves, and to explain the consequences of their choice.

While most people will have to make one of those consequences a trip to the salon to get their hair fixed, at least the OP can rest easy knowing that a solution to her daughter’s new Amish hairdo is close at hand, and that has to count for something.
